The journey from Sydney to St. John's is a major cross-island trek. First, take the Marine Atlantic ferry from North Sydney to Port aux Basques. From there, you must drive approximately 900 kilometers across the entire island of Newfoundland via the Trans-Canada Highway. This drive takes about 10 to 12 hours of pure driving time, excluding stops. It is a beautiful route passing through Gros Morne National Park and Gander. Plan for at least two days to enjoy the scenery safely.
Total Distance: 900 km driving + 175 km ferry crossing.
Break the drive into two days to avoid fatigue.
July and August for the best road conditions and whale watching.
